Rio Ferdinand Names Osimhen, Lookman, and Iwobi as Key to Nigeria’s AFCON Success

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has identified three Super Eagles stars he believes could drive Nigeria to Africa Cup of Nations glory, naming Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Alex Iwobi as decisive figures in the team’s quest for continental success.

The former England international shared his thoughts ahead of Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 semi-final clash against Morocco on Wednesday night, highlighting the attacking quality, experience, and leadership the trio bring to the Super Eagles squad. Ferdinand made the comments while speaking on his popular podcast, Rio Presents, where he discussed the tournament and Nigeria’s chances.

Ferdinand began by jokingly acknowledging his strong ties to Nigeria through his friendships, suggesting that backing any other nation could land him in trouble.

“All of my African friends – most of them are probably 75 per cent of them are Nigerian,” Ferdinand said.

“And if I say anyone else, they are gonna kill me. I know it is not secure yet, but nah, they’ve got Osimhen, though.”

At the heart of Ferdinand’s admiration is Victor Osimhen, Nigeria’s talismanic striker and one of the most feared forwards in world football. Osimhen has consistently delivered for both club and country, combining pace, power, and clinical finishing. Ferdinand pointed out the Napoli star’s historic potential, suggesting that Osimhen is on course to surpass the legendary Rashidi Yekini as Nigeria’s all-time leading goalscorer.

“Osimhen’s looking to go past [Rashidi] Yekini,” Ferdinand added.

Osimhen’s influence extends beyond goals. His relentless pressing, physical presence, and leadership qualities have made him a focal point of Nigeria’s attack during AFCON 2025. Even in matches where chances have been limited, his ability to occupy defenders and create space for teammates has been invaluable.

Ferdinand also reserved special praise for Ademola Lookman, Nigeria’s reigning African Player of the Year. Lookman has been one of the standout performers of the tournament, offering creativity, direct running, and composure in crucial moments. His versatility across the front line has given Nigeria tactical flexibility and an added edge in tight matches.

By referencing Lookman’s individual accolade, Ferdinand underlined the winger’s growing status on the African stage. Lookman’s ability to influence games with moments of brilliance has made him one of Nigeria’s most reliable attacking outlets, especially in high-pressure encounters.

Completing Ferdinand’s trio is Alex Iwobi, whose role in the Super Eagles setup has often been understated but remains vital. The Fulham midfielder provides balance, vision, and experience in midfield, linking defence and attack with intelligence and calmness. Ferdinand emphasized the importance of having a player like Iwobi controlling the tempo and contributing creatively from deeper positions.

“As they have got [Alex] Iwobi playing,” Ferdinand said.

“Like I would like to see Nigeria, man.”

Iwobi’s international experience and understanding of big-match situations have been key assets for Nigeria throughout the tournament. His ability to retain possession and make decisive passes has helped Nigeria maintain structure, particularly in matches where defensive discipline has been paramount.

Ferdinand’s comments reflect the growing respect Nigeria command on the continental stage. With a blend of world-class talent, tournament experience, and tactical organization, the Super Eagles entered the latter stages of AFCON 2025 as one of the strongest contenders for the title.

Although Nigeria’s semi-final clash against Morocco ultimately ended in disappointment, Ferdinand’s assessment of the squad highlights the depth of quality available and the belief many observers have in the team’s core players. Osimhen, Lookman, and Iwobi represent different but complementary strengths — goal threat, creativity, and control — which together form the backbone of Nigeria’s ambitions.

As Nigeria look ahead to future competitions and build toward continued success, Ferdinand’s endorsement serves as recognition of the Super Eagles’ talent and potential. With players of such caliber leading the team, Nigeria remain well-positioned to challenge for honours on the African and global stage.
