Real Madrid sack Xabi Alonso

Real Madrid Part Ways With Xabi Alonso After Supercopa Final Defeat

Real Madrid have officially announced the departure of head coach Xabi Alonso, following their 3–2 defeat to Barcelona in the Supercopa final. The decision was taken less than 24 hours after the loss, bringing a sudden end to Alonso’s time in charge of the LaLiga giants.

Speaking after the Supercopa final, Alonso appeared to downplay the significance of the competition, describing it as “the least important” tournament Real Madrid would contest this season. Those comments, combined with the disappointing result against their fiercest rivals, are believed to have intensified scrutiny around his position at the club.

In an official statement, Real Madrid confirmed that the decision was reached by mutual consent.

“Real Madrid CF announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his time as first-team coach,” the statement read.

“Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home.

“Our club thanks Xabi Alonso and his entire technical team for their work and dedication during this time, and wishes them the best of luck in this new stage of their lives.”

Despite his legendary status at the Santiago Bernabéu as a former player, Alonso had been under mounting pressure in recent weeks. Real Madrid’s inconsistent performances in LaLiga, coupled with underwhelming results in the UEFA Champions League, raised concerns among fans and club executives about the team’s direction and long-term competitiveness.

The timing of the decision is particularly notable, coming just two days before Madrid’s next fixture  a Copa del Rey Round of 16 clash against Albacete. The club is now expected to appoint an interim coach or fast-track a replacement to ensure stability ahead of the crucial knockout tie.

Alonso’s exit marks the end of a challenging chapter for both the coach and the club, as Real Madrid look to reset their season and reassert themselves domestically and in Europe.
